“Mark did not tell his work mates that he had split up. He was hoping he wouldn’t need to before a suitably attractive replacement had been found. But things were not looking good. By Saturday Mark was beginning to get depressed. He lay in bed, not wanting to get dressed. Suddenly the doorbell rang. He ran to the window, bare-chested, and leaned out. The postman was downstairs, standing by the front door.
‘Registered letter,’ shouted the postman. ‘Got to be signed for.’
‘Oh, all right,’ sighed Mark. He pulled on a shirt and ran downstairs.
‘Is it a tax demand?’ He wondered, his mind racing through the horrific possibilities associated with registered letters.
‘Here you are, mate,’ said the postman, handing Mark the screen to sign on.
Mark took the letter and went upstairs. It didn’t look like a tax demand, but it looked rather official. He took a deep breath and opened it.
‘Dear Mr Randall,’ he read, but then his eye was immediately drawn to the bottom of the letter. Unmistakably, there was a cheque attached, and the amount on the cheque was £1000!”
